Canons survivants de la Grande Guerre / WW1 surviving guns
25 janvier 2015

§§- Canons 15cm RK 1872 (1880 ?) à Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Roumanie

De la part de Adi V

I believe these two guns to be Krupp 150mm siege gun Model 1880, but I'm not 100% positive. A definitive ID would be welcome.
They are emplaced in Roses Park, Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Mehedinti county, at the monument comemorating WW1 fallen, built in 1930-33.
These guns are not known to have been in service with the Romanian army, and are the only ones of this type in the country.

There is small inscription on the left hand side of the carriage, below the barrel attachment point, which reads

Fried. Krupp
ESSEN o/R No 21

The other gun has No 23

There's also a barely visible inscription just above the breech, only the number 22 is readable - on both guns

I think it more likely to be a Belgian Krupp-FRC 150mm fortress gun built in 1895. The Germans captured a lot of these in 1914 and used them as close support trench guns. 4 of the similar 150mm howitzers were captured at Poizieres in 1916. There is a surviving Krupp-FRC gun outside the Army Museum in Brussels - http://photobucket.com/gallery/user/afnuyt/media/cGF0aDpvdmVydmFsd2FnZW4zL2JlbGcxNWNta3J1cHBmcmNicnVzLmpwZw==/?ref=

Finally I found out that this is a Krupp 125mm model 1880 siege gun.

It was in widespread use in Holland until WW2, see:

http://www.waroverholland.nl/index.php?page=photo&pid=8852

Also used by the Greeks in the 1913 Balkan war
