§§- Canons Japonais de 10cm Type 38 au service de la Russie, à St Petersburg et Lesany

De la part de Charlie Clelland, des canons Japonais dans la Grande Guerre !

Hi Bernard,

A couple of guns which you don't have in your database. They were 10cm Krupp guns, modified and built under license in Japan as the

Type 38 10cm Field Gun - Type 38 corresponds to 1905 (38th year of the reign of the Meiji Emperor).

The Russians were so desperate for modern artillery they accepted a lot of Japanese artillery during WW1, some older pieces but some modern ones as well.

There's also a Type 38 15cm Howitzer at Hameenlinna which is a Krupp sFH02 with screw breech built under license in Japan. I think there's another

Type 38 howitzer in the fleet museum in Vladivostok.

I'll send the details and images of the 10cm guns in separate emails.

Regards,

Charlie

A 10cm Type 38 is at the rear  of the Artillery Museum, St Petersburg.

I think the Japanese supplied the guns with 107mm calibre to be compatible with Russian ammunition.

The other 10cm Type 38 gun is at the Military Museum Lesany, Czech Republic

The markings on this gun are similar to the St Petersburg gun.

This gun was captured by the Czech Legion at Vladivostok. The Czechs fought on the side of the White forces in the Russian Civil War

and retreated eastwards across Russia when the Bolsheviks were winning.

Eventually the legion got to Vladivostok, shipped to the USA and then across the Atlantic to France. It's probably the longest retreat in history.
